Normally I would not have thought to give Spelling yet to my son but was urged to by my facilitator to try this book and so far I am pleased with the outcome of it. I like the way it takes a base word like "all" and then builds on it by making "tall" and then "stall" and so on.
(Click on the photos below to get a better idea of what I am talking about.)
So this is the only book that came with the "curriculum" and it starts out nice and slow and explains exactly what the concept is behind sequential spelling.
There are 4 days worth per page with 25 spelling words given per day. Starting with simpler words to give at the beginning of the week and then building on those words for the next 3 days.
They expect that you give the word out loud, have your child try to write it, then, before going on to the next word, make sure that he/she has spelled it right. Basically working it through with them... making sure they know what the base word is and then teaching them how to build on it.
When I saw the book, I was a little intimidated. I thought the words would be way too difficult for a 7/8 year old but I have been amazed with how much he has progressed. I hardly have to prompt him at all anymore with how to spell each word.
One thing that I believe has helped a huge amount is the fact that the Phonics book he is working through is teaching many of the same things that he is learning how to do in his Spelling. Things like how to add endings (remember "change the y to an i and add es"...or... "when a single consonant is follow by a soft vowel, double the consonant and add ed"), how to make contractions, and so on.

Well, I hope that answers some of your questions about this particular spelling program!
